Pull out his eyes, Apologize, ...
It sounds similar to Prometheus with the fate of Oedipus. Promethius had his organs pulled out and Oedipus take away his own eye. Some way when it say pull out his eyes, it reminds me of Oedipus when he commits a big sin.

Was it right to kiss his mother or wrong to kiss his mother?
Oedipus fell in love with his mother same as Stephen, who is not conscious about it.They are living the same fate. In the myth of Oedipus, he killed his father and the fate of the city was about to be doomed. Stephen's fate is parallel to Oedipus.

She really does think Chiyo will be a more successful geisha than our Pumpkin and would like to make a bit of money off of her.
Women are treated as profit in certain country. This kind of topic is similar to the book, Snowflower and the Secret Fan, It is an interesting topic of women's life in different culture and country. Some live their lives under the male control. Some were not even given right similar to male. Their lives are connected in the way they are treated in their culture and society viewed them.
